LOGO FOR THE COMMONWEALTH SUMMIT (CHOGM 2005)
Twenty-two year old Mark Scicluna from Balzan is the winner of the CHOGM 2005 Logo Competition. His design was chosen by the Logo Selection Committee from among the 280 proposals submitted, including some from Australia, Ireland and Turkey.
The CHOGM 2005 Logo incorporates three main elements: firstly, an adaptation of the Commonwealth Logo itself with the globe embracing the rich diversity and the many facets of cooperation amongst the 53 Commonwealth Member States.
The second main element is the Maltese identity symbolised by the national flag colours, bearing the George Cross, and shaped in the form of a wave representing the intimate maritime vocation and connection of the Maltese Islands. In this context, twenty-six pointed arrowheads, each of which is a quarter from the historic Maltese eight-pointed cross, open up into fifty-two points representing, together with the logo itself, the fifty three Commonwealth Member States to be warmly hosted by Malta for the CHOGM next November.
The CHOGM 2005 theme “Networking the Commonwealth for Development” is the third element represented in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) term CHOGM2005.MT denoting the CHOGM website address, also portraying Malta as a centre of ICT excellence.
Mark Scicluna is an MCAST graduate in Art & Design and was awarded the special prize for excellent work throughout the 3-year Graphic Design Course. Currently he is employed with one of the main local advertising firms. His other interests include painting, has played the violin as a part-timer with the National Orchestra, and has been a member of the St Monica Choir for a number of years.
All the eligible entries for the CHOGM 2005 Logo Competition may be viewed next week on the website of the Department of Information on: http://www.doi.gov.mt
