CAR FREE DAY
|
The Balzan Local Council will be participating in the initiative being organized by the Ministry for Justice and Internal Affairs with regards to a Car Free Day on Wednesday, 22nd September 2004.
The "In town without my car!" event, is an opportunity for all participating cities to show how matters related to the environment concern them. Presenting our urban centres in a different light for one day by restricting motorised traffic in certain areas, encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport and raising awareness for the environmental impacts of citizens' modal choice, are the key types of actions implemented by the local authorities. Safe streets for children will be the hot topic of the 2004 European Mobility week. The objective is to reduce road safety risks for children in cities.
The streets leading to Balzan village core (St. Mary Street, Main Street, St. Valentine Street, Wigi Ebejer Street, Guze Bonnici Street)will be closed to traffic and parking will not be allowed in the square and Pjazza Bertu Fenech. Only the route bus and vehicles providing a service will be able to enter the area of restriction between 8.30am and 4.00pm.
Everyone is invited to take part in the Car Free Day initative by parking in Wesgha Professur Guze’ Aquilina on that day and walking/cycling to the village square with the participating children. Children are encouraged join in the activities by coming to the meeting point at Wesgha Guze Aquilina by bike and to participate in the activities which will include a workshop on the theme as well as a poster drawing activity.
