An Ugly "Site"?
Balzan Local Council is taking part in Waste Serv’s Progett Skart which is meant to educate citizens to dispose of their waste wisely. In many villages the project is bearing its desired fruit, however the contrary seems to be happening at Wesgha Guze Aquilina, Balzan.

Instead of paper, metal, glass and plastic thrown in the appropriate bins, all sorts of material is being deposited in and around the bins. Sometimes this even includes remnants of dead animals thrown around the bins among putrid domestic waste. The persistent abuse of the bins in the site has turned the area into a dumping site, to the detriment of residents who, in spite of dwelling a considerable distance away, have to bear the terrible smells and health hazards everyday. This is certainly not fair.

The council took action to try to solve the problem, namely:
1. by increasing the frequency of emptying the bins and clearing the area.
2. At times, when smells cannot be tolerated anymore, the contractor is even called to empty the bins on a Sunday.
3. Wardens have been sent to keep close watch on the site.

Yet, in spite of the council’s effort and co-operation with the contractor to keep the site clean, irresponsible persons keep abusing it.

It is a great pity that in a country where rubbish is collected six days a week, and where bulky refuse service is provided free of charge to every household, there are people who persistently and most irresponsibly dump their rubbish in open spaces as fields and open roads, such as Wesgha Profs. Aquilina.

The council appeals to all residents to help spread the right attitude towards the environment. We remind all those who use the site to do it wisely. All waste should be deposited inside the appropriate bin.
Plastic bags in which the waste is carried to the site must not be deposited in bins for metal, paper or glass but separately in the bin for plastic. Lastly and very importantly: the bins are to be used for metal, glass, plastic and paper ONLY.
